A Local organisation Internalizes promotion of women entrepreneurs

Shree Bhumlu Salle Samaj Kalyan Samiti has mobilized its own resources not only to impart skill training on tailoring to four local women but also to provide three units of sewing machines. This 24 years old organisation is located in a remote Bhumlu Salle village of Kavrepalanchowk district in central Nepal serving 510 households in the area. It is a small community rural electrification entity (CREE) affiliated with National Association of Community Rural Electricity Users Nepal (NACEUN) and manages operation of grid electricity in the local areas. The CREE has taken initiative to promote women entrepreneurs after its partnership with WEE-Nepal Project from 2014. The Situation : Ms. Parbati Shrestha at her shop Nepal has made great strides towards gender equality in recent years however it still lacks the opportunities for economic empowerment of women. As Nepal remains a patriarchal society, women’s accesses to economic resources are severely limited. Most of women are involved in unpaid unproductive family labor force. Women in Nepal are responsible for cooking, fetching fuel and water for household purposes. Further, continued dependence on traditional biomass has adverse effects on women’s health. 63% populations lives in rural areas (CBS2011) and are dependent on kerosene and bio-fuel. User Experience with Mud- ICS, from Udayapurgadhi Rural Municipality

The Situation:   Udayapurgadhi Rural Municipality  of Eastern Nepal lies in Udayapur District one of the 14 districts   of   Province No. 1  in eastern   Nepal.  According to the census of 2011 it has total of 317,532 populations of which Chhetri, Rai, Magar are principal ethnic groups of Udayapur. In 2011, its literacy rate was 69 percent and female percentage was 53 percent. According to 2011 census of Nepal, the total population of this municipality was 30,731. Remote geography, diverse settlement, lack of access to education, health services, roads, drinking water, communication, poverty and unemployment are major problems of this rural municipality. Improving Livelihoods through Improved Cookstoves: Majhi Tole, Udaypur

ICS built and promoted under WEE-Nepal Project Majhi Tole (English translation: Majhi = Fisherman; Tole = Hamlet ) is a small village located in Katari Municipality, Ward no. 4 of Udayapur district. It is a poor community, members of which practice fishing as a seasonal occupation. The village, with a heterogeneous population of diverse ethnic backgrounds, consists of 58 households. This village is representative of economically marginalized groups of Nepal, which lack access to clean cooking solutions. This case presents itself as an example of a successful collaboration between the community, government and non-governmental entities to ensure access of poor households to improved cooking solutions. As of September 2016, all families in the village have fixed-type Rocket Stoves (see picture) installed in their kitchens.
